Report: Cyber Attacks Caused Power Outages in Brazil

60Electrical blackouts impacting millions of people in Brazil in 2005 and 2007 were caused by hackers targeting control systems, according to the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes.

In a show set to air Sunday night, CBS blames a two-day outage in Espirito Santo in 2007 on a hack attack. The blackout affected three million people. Another, smaller blackout north of Rio de Janeiro in January 2005 was also triggered by computer intruders, the network claims.

Reports that hacker-extortionists triggered at least one blackout outside the U.S. first surfaced last year, based on comments made by the CIA’s chief cybersecurity officer, Tom Donahue, who declined to identify any country or the specifics of the alleged attacks. In an interview with Threat Level’s Kim Zetter last month, former cybersecurity czar Richard Clarke publicly named Brazil as a hack attack blackout victim for the first time, but didn’t go into details.

60 Minutes hasn’t distinguished itself with its cyber reporting in the past: the show’s alarmist piece on the Conficker botnet showed a picture of a gang of ruthless Russian hackers that turned out to be a bunch of school kids from Finland, and the show’s recent report on internet piracy was rank with unchecked Hollywood talking points. Earlier reports from other media sources about hacker-triggered blackouts within the U.S. proved false.

But it seems unlikely that CBS would pin itself to a claim like this — naming specific, and real blackouts — without solid investigative sourcing beyond the usual suspects in the U.S. intelligence community and cyber security vendors. If they were wrong, their claims would be quickly disputed from within Brazil.

So Threat Level will be tuning in Sunday, and beginning Monday may have to be a little less snarky in its Cybarmageddon coverage. We might even have to rethink those Finnish kids.

Update 11-08-09 1:45 pm: The Brazilian government and the local energy company Furnas are denying the CBS News claim, according to today’s edition of the Brazilian newspaper Folha. Raphael Mandarino Junior, director of the Homeland Security Information and Communication of the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Presidency, also told the paper he’s investigated the claims and found no evidence of hacker attacks.

Update 11-08-09 11:55 pm: The show has aired, and we now know that 60 Minutes’ extraordinary hacker blackout claim comes from “half-a-dozen” sources in the military, intelligence and security communities — not one of which is named. That doesn’t mean the story is false, but the show did lead with former Bush intel chief Mike McConnell. And, really, if you’re sourcing McConnell, you might as well just make it up yourself.

There was no mention in the broadcast that the power company and the Brazilian government dispute the claim.

O advogado de presos políticos na Venezuela, na Rússia, na Bulgária e na Guatemala diz que o presidente ignora os abusos de Chávez e Ahmadinejad
O banqueiro venezuelano Eligio Cedeño, de 44 anos, cumpre prisão preventiva desde fevereiro de 2007, acusado de fraude financeira. No dia 14, uma corte de apelações ordenou que Cedeño esperasse seu julgamento em liberdade. Ele não só não foi libertado, como poderá ficar na cadeia até meados de 2010. Na semana passada, o principal advogado de Cedeño, o nova-iorquino Robert Amsterdam, reuniu-se em Brasília com o presidente do Senado, José Sarney, e outros senadores para denunciar os abusos da Justiça venezuelana, controlada pelo presidente Hugo Chávez.
Em entrevista a éPOCA, Amsterdam demonstra frustração pela posição do presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva em relação ao regime de Chávez e ao do líder iraniano Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. ENTREVISTA - ROBERT AMSTERDAM QUEM é Advogado de 53 anos. Nascido em Nova York, mudou-se aos 5 anos para Toronto, no Canadá. Casado, tem cinco filhos. Mora em Londres, onde é sócio do escritório Amsterdam & Peroff O QUE FAZ é especializado em advogar para presos políticos e companhias privadas, principalmente em países com governos autoritários. Um de seus principais clientes é o russo Mikhail Khodorkovsky, ex-magnata do setor energético e opositor de Vladimir Putin, preso há seis anos por acusações de fraude éPOCA ? Por que o senhor decidiu apelar para o Brasil no caso de Eligio Cedeño? Robert Amsterdam ? Se há um homem no mundo que consegue ?lavar? a reputação de Hugo Chávez, seu nome é Lula. Por isso achei importante visitar o Brasil e apresentar o caso Cedeño. Precisamos tirar a máscara de Chávez, acabar com o mito de que ele é o pai dos pobres na Venezuela. Eu fui a Brasília (pela primeira vez, em junho) e percebi que havia uma cortina de fumaça nas informações sobre Chávez. Agora, vou entregar aos senadores um relatório com documentação farta das pressões sobre o Judiciário para manter Cedeño preso. Uma delas é o testemunho da juíza Yuri López, cuja família foi ameaçada. éPOCA ?
Como se deu essa ameaça? Amsterdam ? Ela teve a coragem de aceitar uma representação de Cedeño contra dois procuradores por terem pedido a colegas a revisão do processo. A juíza foi afastada do cargo, e um de seus filhos sofreu uma tentativa de sequestro (Yuri López vive como asilada política nos Estados Unidos). éPOCA ?
Que meios Chávez usa para controlar o Judiciário? Amsterdam ? Há meios formais e informais. Funciona assim: juízes da Corte Suprema são grampeados e os procuradores federais não ocupam o cargo de maneira fixa. Há uma espécie de sistema rotativo. Se algum deles faz algo que desagrade aos chefes, é afastado. O sistema de trabalho dos juízes é semelhante. Não há garantias para um trabalho isento. Há alguns dias, uma corte de apelação decidiu que Cedeño deveria aguardar o julgamento em liberdade. Desde então, coisas estranhas aconteceram. O tribunal aonde fomos para ter acesso à ordem de soltura estava fechado. E procuradores entraram com um recurso pedindo explicações sobre a decisão só para ganhar tempo. Agora entramos com um pedido de habeas corpus. éPOCA ? O governo dificulta seu acesso a Cedeño? Amsterdam ? Quanto a isso, não posso reclamar muito. Mas já passei por situações complicadas. Em minha última visita a Caracas, alguns minutos depois de meu desembarque, a notícia de minha presença no país estava na internet. Também fui vítima do que chamam de ?hack and tap? (algo como ?hackear e grampear? ). Eles hackeiam seu computador e grampeiam seu telefone. Na Rússia já fui até preso, mas, mesmo que os agentes do governo tenham me perseguido, me espionado, mantinham tudo em sigilo. Na Venezuela, eles divulgaram na TV uma troca de e-mails entre mim e dois advogados venezuelanos, cujo assunto era uma estratégia de defesa para Cedeño. éPOCA ? Como o senhor vê a posição do presidente Lula, que usa o argumento do respeito à soberania para não interferir nos problemas da Venezuela? Amsterdam ? Respeito o presidente Lula e seu grande apoio popular. Mas ele é um intervencionista que finge não ser. A situação da embaixada brasileira em Honduras é de total violação de qualquer aspecto do Direito Diplomático, mas ele diz que não há intervenção. Lula vai receber (o presidente iraniano, Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad após uma repressão brutal contra estudantes iranianos em Teerã. E ainda há Chávez, o homem que certa vez disse publicamente para a polícia jogar ?uma boa dose de gás? na cara de estudantes que protestavam em Caracas. Defendo presos políticos e o respeito aos direitos humanos em países subdesenvolvidos há 30 anos e nunca vi um líder, legítimo ou não, que tenha sido capaz disso. Não digo que Lula não seja consciente do perigo que Chávez representa, mas isso não adianta nada quando Lula diz haver democracia na Venezuela. Vamos ser bem claros: não existe democracia na ausência da lei. E quem mais deveria estar ciente disso é Lula. Não se pode fingir que há eleições livres e justas num país em que as leis são interpretadas de acordo com a vontade de uma pessoa. A prisão de Cedeño é uma questão absolutamente política, pois ele manifestava apoio a opositores de Chávez, mesmo sem participação ativa. Para Chávez, deixar Cedeño na cadeia é uma questão de honra. Ele apresentou-se voluntariamente à polícia, de tão convencido de que era inocente (Cedeño era diretor de um banco que fez uma operação de câmbio para dar dólares a uma empresa na compra de computadores americanos. As máquinas não existiam. Ele afirma não saber da fraude na negociação, que recebera a autorização do governo venezuelano). éPOCA ? Como o Brasil pode ajudar? Amsterdam ? Sou um dos que consideram (o ex-chanceler alemão) Gerhard Schröder um criminoso, por causa de sua defesa intransigente aos interesses da Alemanha com a Rússia. Schröder estava simplesmente dizendo que era preciso ser aliado de um Estado de terror, que trata seus presos políticos de forma brutal. Chávez é um dos poucos líderes que apoiam abertamente uma organização (as Forças Armadas Revolucionárias da Colômbia) que sequestra pessoas e se financia com isso, além do narcotráfico. A última pessoa que Lula poderia apoiar no mundo é Chávez. O que Lula deveria apoiar é o respeito às leis e aos negócios limpos entre seus vizinhos, não esse Estado sem lei e completamente fora de controle. Chávez acredita que seu futuro está diretamente ligado ao de Lula. E Lula, hoje, está numa situação privilegiada: seu país tem grandes reservas de energia, uma economia estável e um papel de líder no eixo Sul-Sul. Tudo isso vai completamente contra o que vigora na Venezuela. Chávez não tem lugar nesse modelo. éPOCA ? O apoio de Lula a Chávez é injustificável, então? Amsterdam ? é compreensível que o governo brasileiro tenha seus interesses na Venezuela. Não estou dizendo que Lula precise cortar as relações diplomáticas com Caracas. Mas lamento que Lula esteja aderindo a uma estratégia dos chineses e russos de não interferir em coisas horríveis a sua volta. Lula fecha os olhos para os direitos humanos, algo que transcende a questão da soberania nacional. Tivemos o caso recente do Irã, que executou estudantes, e, em seguida, Lula deu uma grotesca declaração de que eles eram uns perdedores (como no futebol). Agora que o Brasil virou sede das Olimpíadas e é reconhecido como força internacional, será que os brasileiros vão querer ver grandes protestos às vésperas dos Jogos por ser um país que apoia regimes desse tipo? Se o Brasil quiser mesmo o ingresso da Venezuela no Mercosul, é bom refletir sobre em que termos se dará essa inclusão. ?Lula diz haver democracia na Venezuela. Vamos ser claros: não há democracia na ausência de lei. E Lula é quem mais deveria saber isso? Outro caso mais assombroso é a morte de Toninho do PT onde Lula convida o advogado da Família da Vitima para ser Ministro da Injustiça , depois Ministro muda completamente a opinião de quando era advogado da Família , então a prova esteve sempre evidente Direitos Humanos tem que ser Humanos Direitos Cadê a Humanidade desse Governo ? A pesar de que el Comisario Hernando Contreras declaró que el testimonio dado testigo estrella Giovanny Vásquez no merecía credibilidad y existía falsedad de evidencias y documentos, no se ha hecho justicia.

(I know she writes “25″ but she actually has two more.) And as a final note of my own, Martha Colmenares insists that there are two important political prisoners whose names need to be added to this list; Gregory Umanes and Louis Chacin, both arrested in 2003.

Ministro considera um exagero classificar o episódio como "o apagão do governo Lula"


Para Tarso Genro, ministro da Justiça, o apagão que atingiu, na noite desta terça-feira, 18 Estados do Brasil foi “um micro-problema, perto das grandes questões que já foram solucionadas pelo governo no país”. Em uma tentativa de tentar minimizar a repercussão negativa, Genro lembrou que o governo já enfrentou situações bem piores.

Em entrevista ao repórter José Maria Trindade, o deputado José Aníbal, salientou que os investimentos brasileiros em infraestrutura precisam ser melhor fiscalizados. Aníbal criticou ainda a declaração de Tarso Genro e alegou que o ministro está longe da realidade brasileira.

Já o senador Delcídio Amaral afirma que o Brasil não podem ficar à mercê de apagões. O integrante da Comissão de Energia da Câmara, o deputado José Carlos Aleluia, também criticou a operação do sistema energético brasileiro.

O deputado Vanderlei Macris, do PSDB, é um dos parlamentares que quer esclarecimentos do ministro de Minas e Energia no Congresso Nacional. O parlamentar democrata destaca que será criada uma comissão externa para acompanhar o caso.

A Comissão de Fiscalização e Controle da Câmara aprovou o pedido para que o ministro Edison Lobão preste esclarecimentos à Casa. Devido a um acordo, o requerimento proposto pelo deputado Vanderlei Macris foi convertido a um convite. De acordo com a base aliada, o ministro de Minas e Energia se comprometeu a comparecer ao Congresso, mesmo não sendo obrigado. A oposição ainda protocola uma série de pedidos para que Lobão explique o blecaute que deixou 18 estados brasileiros às escuras na noite de terça-feira.

Brazil's president denied Wednesday that underinvestment was to blame for the worst power outage in a decade, which left a huge swath of the country in the dark for more than five hours and raised doubts about the reliability of its energy infrastructure.

The blackout Tuesday night left tens of millions of people without electricity across most of the country's wealthy southeastern region.

Energy officials said it was likely caused when a storm downed three transmission lines carrying power from a hydroelectric dam on Brazil's border with Paraguay.

"We didn't have a failure in the generation of energy, we had a problem in the transmission line," President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told reporters in Brasilia.



An Energy Ministry official said the outage was triggered because the system was not equipped to cope with so many downed lines at once.

Paraguay, who shares the power from the Itaipu dam, the world's second biggest hydroelectric producer, also lost country-wide power, but for a much shorter time.

BOGOTÁ, Colômbia (AFP) - O governo da Colômbia informou neste domingo que não fará "nenhum gesto" hostil contra seus países vizinhos, e que recorrerá à Organização dos Estados Americanos (OEA) e às Nações Unidas após a declaração do presidente da Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, que conclamou seus compatriotas a se prepararem "para a guerra".

"Diantes destas ameaças de guerra pronunciadas pelo governo da Venezuela, o governo da Colômbia se propõe a ir à OEA e ao Conselho de Segurança da ONU", indicou o secretário de imprensa do presidente Álvaro Uribe, César Mauricio Velásquez.

Velásquez disse que "a Colômbia não fez nem fará nenhum gesto de guerra contra a comunidade internacional (e) menos ainda contra países irmãos, e o único interesse que nos move é a superação do narcoterrorismo que durante tantos anos maltratou os colombianos".

"A Colômbia mantém sua disposição ao diálogo franco, às vias do entendimento e às normas do direito internacional", destacou o comunicado presidencial.

The Real Cause of Obesity

It's not gluttony. It's genetics. Why our moralizing misses the point.

Despite receiving a MacArthur genius award for her work in Alabama "forging an inspiring model of compassionate and effective medical care in one of the most underserved regions of the United States," Regina Benjamin's qualifications to be surgeon general have been questioned. Why? She is overweight. "It tends to undermine her credibility," Dr. Marcia Angell, former editor of The New England Journal of Medicine, said in an interview with ABC News. "I do think at a time when a lot of public-health concern is about the national epidemic of obesity, having a surgeon general who is noticeably overweight raises questions in people's minds."

It is not enough, it seems, that the obese must suffer the medical consequences of their weight, consequences that include diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, and that cause nearly 300,000 deaths in the United States each year. They must also suffer the opprobrium heaped on them by people like Angell or Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), who advised the obese to "Look in the mirror because you are the one to blame." In our society, perhaps no group is more stigmatized than the obese.

The abuse is nothing new, of course. Four hundred years ago, Shakespeare had Prince Hal hurl a barrage of insults at Falstaff, calling him "fat-witted," "horseback-breaker," and a "huge hill of flesh." But Shakespeare had an excuse. In his time essentially nothing was known about the real reasons that people are fat. Today we have no such excuse. Modern medical science has gone a long way toward explaining the causes of obesity, and the bottom line is clear: obesity is not a personal choice. The obese are so primarily as a result of their genes.

Genetic studies have shown that the particular set of weight-regulating genes that a person has is by far the most important factor in determining how much that person will weigh. The heritability of obesity—a measure of how much obesity is due to genes versus other factors—is about the same as the heritability of height. It's even greater than that for many conditions that people accept as having a genetic basis, including heart disease, breast cancer, and schizophrenia. As nutrition has improved over the past 200 years, Americans have gotten much taller on average, but it is still the genes that determine who is tall or short today. The same is true for weight. Although our high-calorie, sedentary lifestyle contributes to the approximately 10-pound average weight gain of Americans compared to the recent past, some people are more severely affected by this lifestyle than others. That's because they have inherited genes that increase their predisposition for accumulating body fat. Our modern lifestyle is thus a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for the high prevalence of obesity in our population.

Over the past decade, scientists have identified many of the genes that regulate body weight and have proved that in some instances, different variants of these genes can lead a person to be fat or thin. These genes underlie a weight-regulating system that is remarkably precise. The average person takes in a million or more calories per year, maintaining within a narrow range over the course of decades. This implies that the body balances calorie consumption with calorie expenditure, and does with a precision greater than 99.5 percent. Even the most vigilant calorie counter couldn't compete, if for no other reason than that the calorie counts on food labels are often off by 10 percent or more.

The genes that control food intake and metabolism act to keep weight in a stable range by creating a biological force that resists weight change in either direction. When weight is gained, hunger is reduced. When weight is lost, the unconscious drive to eat is stimulated and acts to return weight to the starting point. Moreover, the greater the amount of weight that is lost, the greater the sense of hunger that develops. Thus, when the obese lose large amounts of weight by conscious effort, their bodies fight back even more strongly by increasing hunger and reducing energy expenditure. If you think it is hard to lose 10 to 20 pounds (and it is), try to imagine what it would feel like to lose many tens or even hundreds of pounds.
Anyone who doubts the power of this biologic system should study the case of a young boy in England a few years back. He had a mutation in a critical gene, the one that produces the hormone leptin. Leptin is made by fat tissue and sends a signal informing the brain that there are adequate stores of energy. When leptin drops, appetite increases. Because of a genetic error, this boy could not make this hormone, which left him ravenously hungry all of the time. At age 4 he ate 1,125 calories at a single meal—about half of what a normal adult eats in an entire day. As a result he already weighed 90 pounds and was well on his way to developing diabetes. At the time, his similarly affected cousin was 8 and weighed 200 pounds. After a few leptin injections, the boy's calorie intake dropped to 180 calories per meal, and by the time he was 6 his weight had dropped into the normal range. Nothing changed except the hormone levels: his parents weren't more or less permissive, his snacks did not switch from processed to organic, his willpower was not bolstered. Rather this boy was a victim of a malfunctioning weight-regulating system that led to an uncontrollable drive to eat. This examples illustrates that feeding behavior is a basic drive, similar to thirst and other life-sustaining drives. The key role of leptin and other molecules to control feeding behavior undercuts the common misconception that food intake is largely under voluntary control.

While mutations in the leptin gene like the cases described above are rare, nearly 10 percent of morbidly obese individuals carry defects in genes that regulate food intake, metabolism, and body weight. The evidence further indicates that the rest of the obese population carries genetic alterations in other, as yet unidentified, single genes or combinations of genes (polygenes) interacting with environmental factors.

So if you are thin, it might be more appropriate for you to thank your own "lean" genes and refrain from stigmatizing the obese. A broad acceptance of the biologic basis of obesity would not only be fair and right, but would also allow us to collectively focus on what is most important—one's health rather than one's weight. There is no evidence that obese individuals need to "normalize" their weight to reap health benefits. In fact, it is not even clear whether there are enduring health benefits to weight loss among obese individuals who do not suffer from diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, or liver disease. What is known is that the obese who do suffer from these conditions receive a disproportionately large benefit from even modest weight loss, which together with exercise and a heart-healthy diet can go a long way toward improving health.

While research into the biologic system that controls weight is moving toward the development of effective therapies for obesity, we are not there yet. In the meantime we must change our attitudes toward the obese and focus less on appearance and more on health. In their efforts to lose weight they are fighting against their biology. But they also are fighting against a society that wrongly believes that obesity is a personal failing.

A lista "Tiago, José, Judas e Simão" lhe diz alguma coisa? Uma dica: não são nomes de apóstolos. Na verdade, de acordo com o Evangelho de Marcos, estes seriam os irmãos de Jesus, que são citados ao lado de pelo menos duas irmãs de Cristo (cujos nomes não aparecem). Os católicos e ortodoxos normalmente interpretam o trecho como uma referência a primos ou parentes mais distantes do mestre de Nazaré, mas o mais provável é que essa visão seja incorreta. A maior parte dos (poucos) indícios históricos indica que Maria e José realmente tiveram filhos depois do nascimento de Jesus.
É claro que, sem nenhum acesso a registros familiares contemporâneos ou evidências arqueológicas diretas, a conclusão só pode envolver probabilidades, e não certezas. "Se a busca do 'Jesus histórico' já é difícil, a pesquisa dos 'parentes históricos de Jesus' é quase impossível", escreve o padre e historiador americano John P. Meier no primeiro volume de "Um Judeu Marginal", série de livros (ainda não terminada) sobre Jesus como figura histórica.
Meier explica que, ao longo da tradição cristã, teólogos e comentaristas do texto bíblico se dividiram basicamente entre duas posições, batizadas com expressões em latim. A primeira é a chamada "virginitas ante partum" (virgindade antes do parto), segundo o qual Maria permaneceu virgem até o nascimento de Jesus, tendo filhos biológicos com seu marido José mais tarde. A segunda, "virginitas post partum" (virgindade após o parto), postula que Maria não teve outros filhos e até que seu estado de virgem teria sido milagrosamente restaurado após o único parto.
A "virginitas post partum" foi, durante muito tempo, a posição defendida por quase todos os cristãos, diz o historiador -- até pelos protestantes, que hoje não se apegam a esse dogma. "Um fato surpreendente, e que muitos católicos e protestantes hoje em dia desconhecem, é que as grandes figuras da Reforma, como Martinho Lutero e Calvino, defendiam a virgindade perpétua de Maria", escreve ele. Já especialistas católicos modernos, como o alemão Rudolf Pesch, defendem que Maria provavelmente teve outros filhos sem que isso tenha levado a reprimendas diretas do Vaticano.

Diante das menções claras aos "irmãos e irmãs de Jesus" nos Evangelhos (que inclusive se mostram contrários à pregação dele, chegando mesmo a considerá-lo louco), como a interpretação da "virginitas post partum" prevaleceu?
"Houve três formas de interpretar esses textos", afirma o americano Thomas Sheehan, estudioso do cristianismo primitivo e professor da Universidade Stanford. "Além de considerar essas pessoas como irmãos biológicos de Jesus, sabemos da posição de Epifânio, bispo do século IV para quem os irmãos eram de um casamento anterior de José. Mas a opinião que prevaleceu foi a de Jerônimo, que era um excelente filólogo [especialista no estudo comparativo de idiomas] e viveu na mesma época. Jerônimo dizia que a palavra grega 'adelphos', que nós traduzimos como 'irmão', era só uma versão de um termo aramaico que pode ter um significado mais amplo e que pode querer dizer, por exemplo, primo."

Jerônimo tinha razão num ponto: quando o Antigo Testamento foi traduzido do hebraico para o grego, a palavra "adelphos" realmente foi usada para representar o termo genérico "irmão" (empregado para parentes mais distantes no original). De fato, o hebraico, bem como o aramaico (língua falada pelos judeus do tempo de Jesus na terra de Israel), não tem uma palavra para "primo". O problema é que há um único caso comprovado de que a palavra hebraica "irmão" tenha tido o significado real de "primo". Essa única ocorrência está no Primeiro Livro das Crônicas -- e mesmo assim o contexto deixa claro que as pessoas em questão não são irmãs, mas primas.
No entanto, o caso do Novo Testamento é diferente, argumenta Meier: não se trata de "grego de tradução", mas de textos originalmente escritos em grego, nos quais não havia motivo para usar um termo que poderia gerar confusão. O próprio Paulo, autor de várias cartas do Novo Testamento, chama Tiago, chefe da comunidade cristã de Jerusalém após a morte de Jesus, de "irmão do Senhor", ao escrever para fiéis de origem não-judaica (ou seja, que não sabiam hebraico ou aramaico). De quebra, a Carta aos Colossenses, atribuída a Paulo, usa até o termo grego "anepsios", que quer dizer "primo" de forma precisa.
Reforçando esse argumento, o escritor judeu Flávio Josefo, ao relatar em grego a morte de Tiago, também o chama de "irmão de Jesus". E o contexto dos Evangelhos reforça a impressão de que se tratam de irmãos de sangue, argumenta Meier. Os irmãos e a mãe de Jesus são sempre citados em conjunto. Quando Maria e os parentes de Jesus tentam interromper uma pregação, ele chega a pronunciar a polêmica frase "Qualquer um que fizer a vontade do meu Pai celestial é meu irmão, minha irmã e minha mãe". Para Meier, a frase perderia muito de sua força se o significado real dela se referisse a "meu primo, minha prima e minha mãe".
Para Geza Vermes, professor de estudos judaicos da Universidade de Oxford (Reino Unido), as próprias narrativas sobre o nascimento de Jesus dão apoio a tese de que Maria e José tiveram outros filhos mais tarde. No Evangelho de Mateus, afirma-se que José não "conheceu" (eufemismo para ter relações sexuais com alguém) sua mulher até que Jesus nascesse. Ainda de acordo com Vermes, em seu livro "Natividade", é importante notar o uso do verbo grego "synerchesthai", ou "coabitar", para falar da relação entre José e Maria. O verbo, quando empregado pelos autores do Novo Testamento, implica sempre relações sexuais entre homem e mulher, diz ele.

Brazilian berry destroys cancer cells in lab, UF study shows


GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A Brazilian berry popular in health food contains antioxidants that destroyed cultured human cancer cells in a recent University of Florida study, one of the first to investigate the fruit’s purported benefits.

Published today in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study showed extracts from acai (ah-SAH’-ee) berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

“Acai berries are already considered one of the richest fruit sources of antioxidants,” Talcott said. “This study was an important step toward learning what people may gain from using beverages, dietary supplements or other products made with the berries.”

He cautioned that the study, funded by UF sources, was not intended to show whether compounds found in acai berries could prevent leukemia in people.
“This was only a cell-culture model and we don’t want to give anyone false hope,” Talcott said. “We are encouraged by the findings, however. Compounds that show good activity against cancer cells in a model system are most likely to have beneficial effects in our bodies.”

Other fruits, including grapes, guavas and mangoes, contain antioxidants shown to kill cancer cells in similar studies, he said. Experts are uncertain how much effect antioxidants have on cancer cells in the human body, because factors such as nutrient absorption, metabolism and the influence of other biochemical processes may influence the antioxidants’ chemical activity.

Another UF study, slated to conclude in 2006, will investigate the effects of acai’s antioxidants on healthy human subjects, Talcott said. The study will determine how well the compounds are absorbed into the blood, and how they may affect blood pressure, cholesterol levels and related health indicators. So far, only fundamental research has been done on acai berries, which contain at least 50 to 75 as-yet unidentified compounds.

“One reason so little is known about acai berries is that they’re perishable and are traditionally used immediately after picking,” he said. “Products made with processed acai berries have only been available for about five years, so researchers in many parts of the world have had little or no opportunity to study them.”
Talcott said UF is one of the first institutions outside Brazil with personnel studying acai berries. Besides Talcott, UF’s acai research team includes Susan Percival, a professor with the food science and human nutrition department, David Del Pozo-Insfran, a doctoral student with the department and Susanne Mertens-Talcott, a postdoctoral associate with the pharmaceutics department of UF’s College of Pharmacy.

Acai berries are produced by a palm tree known scientifically as Euterpe oleracea, common in floodplain areas of the Amazon River, Talcott said. When ripe, the berries are dark purple and about the size of a blueberry. They contain a thin layer of edible pulp surrounding a large seed.

Historically, Brazilians have used acai berries to treat digestive disorders and skin conditions, he said. Current marketing efforts by retail merchants and Internet businesses suggest acai products can help consumers lose weight, lower cholesterol and gain energy.
“A lot of claims are being made, but most of them haven’t been tested scientifically,” Talcott said. “We are just beginning to understand the complexity of the acai berry and its health-promoting effects.”

In the current UF study, six different chemical extracts were made from acai fruit pulp, and each extract was prepared in seven concentrations.

Four of the extracts were shown to kill significant numbers of leukemia cells when applied for 24 hours. Depending on the extract and concentration, anywhere from about 35 percent to 86 percent of the cells died.

The UF study demonstrates that research on foods not commonly consumed in the United States is important, because it may lead to unexpected discoveries, said Joshua Bomser, an assistant professor of molecular nutrition and functional foods at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

But familiar produce items have plenty of health-giving qualities, he said.
“Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with decreased risk for many diseases, including heart disease and cancer,” said Bomser, who researches the effects of diet on chronic diseases. “Getting at least five servings a day of these items is still a good recommendation for promoting optimal health.”

Should All Males Be Circumcised?

The day your wife gives birth to a baby boy, the kind, bespectacled face of Marvin L. Wang, M.D., is one that you want to see coming through the recovery-room door. Co-director of newborn nurseries at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Dr. Wang has a perky, conversational bedside manner that puts everyone at ease.
I have to hustle to keep up with him as he strides energetically between hospital rooms. Right now he's congratulating a pair of new parents. Larry is standing on wobbly legs, looking both ecstatic and shell-shocked, while Joy sits serenely, holding their newborn son to her breast.
Dr. Wang jokes with the new parents a bit and then says, "I understand you may want to have a circumcision for your baby."
Larry and Joy don't answer immediately. At last Larry says, "Well ... we don't know."
Dr. Wang smiles. He's familiar with the befuddled expression on Larry's face.
Circumcision, of course, is the surgical removal of the penile foreskin from the glans—the fleshy crown of the penis. It is one of the most commonly performed procedures in American hospitals, and except for abortion, it may be the most controversial. The procedure has long been known to reduce the spread of a few rare, serious diseases, and to prevent a few annoying, uncomfortable ones. But in 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) determined that the risk of surgical complications, though small, nearly canceled out the benefits. They neither discouraged nor recommended the procedure. Since then, 16 states have eliminated Medicaid coverage for nearly all circumcisions.
But two years ago, a consortium of experts convened by the World Health Organization and UNAIDS (the United Nations' HIV program) announced that circumcision should indeed "be part of a comprehensive HIV prevention package." It did so because three separate, meticulous medical trials in Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa, involving more than 10,000 men, had proved that circumcision could reduce the risk of female-to-male HIV infection by approximately 60 percent. This discovery is one that, over the next two decades, could save three million lives in Africa alone.
Now, no one believes that the potential health benefits for American males are nearly as great, or as urgent, as they are for men in Africa, where HIV is spread mostly through heterosexual intercourse. Still, similar study results are turning up on this continent, as well. A team of researchers from the CDC, Johns Hopkins, and the Baltimore health department examined the records of more than 1,000 African American males—all heterosexual—who tested positive for HIV at Maryland clinics. Uncircumcised men were 50 percent more likely to be infected.
These results have caused many U.S. doctors to reconsider their positions. "I've always told families that the health benefits of circumcision are real, but not enough to warrant advocating that all boys be circumcised," says Lise Johnson, M.D., the director of healthy-newborn nurseries at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. "But I find these HIV studies pretty striking. The weight of scientific evidence might be shifting in favor of circumcision."
Larry, the new dad, is circumcised himself but never thought much about circumcision until his wife became pregnant. "Joy kept saying, 'It's up to you,'" Larry tells Dr. Wang, "but when I finally said I wanted to do it, she said, 'Whoa! We have to talk.'"
After a few uneasy moments, the new father's feelings spill out.
"I guess I don't feel too strongly either way," he says, looking at his son tenderly. "But if there's a risk of hurting him.... "
Pain, of course, is the first question that comes to mind whenever the words cut and penis are used in the same sentence. Ask Marilyn Fayre Milos about pain—or better yet, don't. The founder of the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers (NOCIRC—get it?) first witnessed the procedure in 1979 while training for her nurse's degree. The unlucky baby, she later wrote, was "strapped spread-eagle to a plastic board ... struggling against his restraints—tugging, whimpering, and then crying helplessly" while awaiting the knife. Then as the doctor, using no anesthesia, began cutting into the penis with a scalpel, "the baby began to gasp and choke, breathless from his shrill continuous screams.... "
Is that what Dr. Wang is offering to do to Larry and Joy's innocent baby boy?
Not quite. Dr. Wang says the operation rarely hurts much anymore; since the 1990s, it's become routine in U.S. hospitals to anesthetize babies before the procedure. For every 1,500 circumcisions, there are maybe three complications, nearly all of which amount to a little unexpected bleeding or a treatable infection. In return, according to the AAP, circumcised boys have a lower risk of urinary-tract infections and penile cancer, and, indeed, "a slightly lower risk of getting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS." But weighed against the potential risks, says the AAP, "these benefits are not sufficient ... to recommend that all infant boys be circumcised." (The AAP is now reviewing its guidelines, in light of recent scientific news.)
Circumcised or not, every man owes his foreskin a great debt of gratitude for its service in the womb. In the third month of gestation, when the nascent penis begins to bloom, the foreskin forms a little protective blanket under which the rest of the penis can safely grow. But once you and your penis are fully baked, the advantage of a foreskin is not clear. Some scientists speculate that it protected the prehistoric penis as it swung, naked, through thick forests and over tall grasses; and unless you take your penis on that sort of excursion, they argue, you don't need a foreskin.
That perceived uselessness may be one reason circumcision has such a long and varied history. Archeological evidence suggests that the practice may be at least 6,000 years old. Muslims and Jews, along with the aborigines of Australia, the Aztecs and Mayans of this hemisphere, and many other cultures all independently adopted this squirm-inducing practice, and it seems unlikely they'd have done so unless they were convinced that it conferred some earthly benefit.
Here in the United States, foreskins were left mostly undisturbed until the second half of the nineteenth century. But it wasn't until the North Africa campaign of World War II that American doctors turned into enthusiastic circumcisers. More than 145,000 American GIs based there slacked off on their cleaning regimens and came down with foreskin-related ouches—chiefly, balanoposthitis (inflammation of the foreskin and glans), phimosis (a foreskin that's too tight to retract over the glans), and paraphimosis (a foreskin stuck in the retracted position). After the war, doctors advanced a theory that circumcision reduces rates of cervical cancer—a hypothesis now confirmed by scientific research.
I googled the word "circumcision," and two of the first three sites that popped up were the Circumcision Research Center and the Circumcision Information and Resource Pages—titles that suggest unbiased collections of data. In fact, both sites are run by anti-circumcision crusaders. A seemingly unending list of similar sites followed: Mothers Against Circumcision, Doctors Opposing Circumcision, Stop Infant Circumcision Society, and Milos' NOCIRC. Many of these activists have spent decades arguing that circumcision has no medical value, and recent scientific revelations have left them red-faced—not with embarrassment, but anger. According to Milos, for instance, all three of the Africa trials were part of what she calls an "ill-fated plot to circumcise everyone regardless of AIDS status!" She and others often demonize the scientists whose research has produced facts that contradict their extremist views.
Daniel Halperin, Ph.D., spent much of the 1990s poring over epidemiological studies of AIDS, looking for places in Africa and Asia where HIV rates were relatively low and then trying to figure out why. Halperin, a senior research scientist at Harvard's school of public health, concluded that circumcision played a role and he paid a high price for saying so—many people thought he was nuts. In some ways, since he's been proved right, the price has become steeper. To get a flavor of it, look at his inbox.
"F**K OFF," begins one e-mail, "with your PRO-CIRCUMCISION BIASED BULLS**T ... . [Forcing] genital surgery on young boys who haven't done anything wrong." Another e-mail calls him "a Super Racist" devoted to the murder of Black Africans under the guise of helping them.
"It's been quite a struggle," Halperin sighs, shaking his head.
But it's not without its rewards. The Africa trials add substantial weight to a mounting pile of evidence that circumcision also reduces the spread of other sexually transmitted illnesses, including several types of cancer and venereal disease. The journal BMC Infectious Diseases published a study (co-authored by Halperin and four others) that compared rates of cervical cancer—caused by the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV—in more than 100 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In countries where fewer than 20 percent of men were circumcised, cervical-cancer rates were about 70 percent higher than in countries where more than 80 percent were circumcised.
All of this makes many public-health experts in the United States lament the decision of some states to withdraw Medicaid coverage for routine circumcision. "Because uncircumcised males face greater risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections," a different study concludes, "lack of Medicaid coverage for circumcision may translate into future health disparities for children born to poor families."
So what's the verdict? Should all males be circumcised? Not one doctor or scientist interviewed for this article expressed that opinion. Robert Bailey, Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, feels that "American parents should definitely factor all of this in, but it's not an automatic.
Most of the diseases [circumcision] is known to prevent are pretty rare in the United States." But, Halperin notes, "those illnesses may be rare at least partly because circumcision has been so widespread here."
But whatever you decide for you and yours, do not let anyone tell you circumcision can't slow the march of HIV. At a time when billions of American tax dollars are pouring into Africa to fight AIDS, it is extremely important that money is spent on methods that have been proved to help.
"It's a simple surgery, but people think it's painful because it has to do with the penis," says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of the division of male reproductive medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Most patients choose general anesthesia for the hour-long surgery and go back to work the next day, says Dr. Lipshultz.
